Revolutionising Personal Finance Management Apps

Challenge

PFM apps have always only displayed user data without truly helping users improve their finances. This meant users quickly realised the app wasn't adding real value, leading to extremely high churn, a problem endemic across the entire PFM category.

Outcome

Redesigned the core experience around actionable AI-driven insights rather than passive data display, giving users clear recommendations they could understand and act on, moving MoneyPal from a data viewer to a genuine financial co-pilot.

Hi, I'm Bala Vignesh K, a 0→1 product builder based in Bengaluru. I've co-founded and shipped two consumer products: MoneyPal, a personal finance app, and UnMay, a services marketplace. I enjoy taking a real user problem from a rough idea to a working product, and then improving it through quick iterations and user feedback.

At MoneyPal, I owned the product design end to end. I designed the app experience and the website UI, gathered feedback from early users, and refined flows to make the product simpler and more useful. A big part of my work was turning raw expense data into clear, high quality financial insights that users could understand and act on. I also designed a Split feature to help users split bills with friends, with a clean flow to track who owes what.

I care about details, but I care even more about outcomes like activation, retention, and whether the product genuinely makes life easier for the user. I enjoy the full stack of PM work: user research, PRDs, prioritisation, UX, experimentation, and go-to-market.

Outside of work, I enjoy F1 and playing pickleball. Always happy to chat about product, strategy, or interesting problems.
